Saturday afternoon, Manami, Yasuyo and I went to Colorfultown Shopping Mall. Manami used to work in our office over a year ago, but had left to pursue her dream of becoming an airline stewardess. She works for one of the Japanese national airlines and flies domestically.
Apparently Manami is enjoying her new life very much. She has at least 13 days off a month which leaves her plenty of time to take classes like ikebana (flower arranging), tea ceremony, glass blowing, flamenco, and in a few months she wants to go to Saipan to get her diving certificate. However, the most astonishing dream to me and to many of her other friends as well, is that Manami wants to go to New Zealand for about 10 days and live with a host family on a farm.
I asked her why she had this particular dream and her answer was:
"Because I want to run with the sheep."
I laughed as I said that I had heard of women running with the wolves, but never of women running with the sheep, but she was very committed to realizing her goal.
It should be very interesting because Manami is far from being a farm girl. She usually wears expensive clothes, carries designer handbags, sports manicured nails and lots of make-up. She'll bring a lot of class to the farm, that's for sure.
After the mall, we took Manami to the train station. As we waved goodbye to her, Yasuyo declared that she was hungry, so I guided her to "El Paso" tex-mex restaurant where she got her first taste of tacos, burritos and quesadillas. She watched me closely as I ate as she had no clue how to eat the new-to-her food.
Here are my two friends. Yasuyo is on the left and Manami on the right.
