In March, I went back to the States, where I went about consuming many of my "I can't get it in Japan" foods. Well, I have found a company in Japan that imports foods and other products from the US for a reasonable price. They sent me three catalogs and I ordered some items online.
I was having a Japanese class in my apartment when my order arrived. The deliveryman handed me two medium sized boxes, one of which was very heavy. I looked at the markings on the outside of the heavy box and blanched.
I pushed the boxes into my tatami room and screamed "It's CHRISTMAS!" to my Japanese teacher and asked her if she would mind if I opened the boxes.I rustled through the first one and took out one box of Frosted Strawberry Poptarts and gave it to my teacher. I also let her try a Fig Newton. I explained what the Nature Foods Tofu Scrambler was, showed her some other things and that was the end of box number one.
The other box sat waiting to be opened, but I really didn't need to open it. The contents were clearly labeled on the side. Surely, that couldn't be all that was in the box? I couldn't have ordered that many! I opened the box and peered in at twelve 40 oz. cobalt blue boxes with a picture of a peace-loving guy in a funky hat on them. Oh my Buddha, I did. I had ordered an entire case of Quaker Quick Grits.
