I rolled over in my futon, vaguely aware that something wasn't right. When I realized that there were intruders in my kitchen, just on the other side of my sliding doors, I sprang up to my knees, teeth gnashing on the heart in the back of my throat.
Kneeling, I looked over at my phone, wondering who I could call as I heard rummaging sounds coming from the kitchen.
And that's when I saw them.
Illumined by the LCD from my telephone, were columns of Japanese kanji written in a medium blue ink on the thick paper doors. They had been drawn there as I slept!
Despite my terror, I propelled myself forward and slung open the sliding door. As I felt the light from the kitchen upon me, in the corner of my eye, I saw the blue watercolored writing disappear and that's when I . . .
woke up.
I woke up standing in the opening of the sliding door. I woke up with one foot in the kitchen and one foot in the tatami room. I woke up with my heart thrashing and my chest heaving with pants of fear.
Shit, what a rude awakening!
That makes two "writing on the wall" dreams I've had recently. What am I trying to tell myself?
